Young Star Joins the Tour Full-Time
Great News for the PGA Tour as Rory McIlroy has decided to join full time with hopes of moving up in the world ranking.
This 20-year-old from Northern Ireland, said Wednesday at the Hong Kong Open that he will be competing against stronger fields in the United States, which should make him a better golfer. No question about it… it will make the PGA Tour better.
He already is No. 17 in the world, despite turning pro only two years ago.
McIlroy made in the cut in all four majors this year, tying for third at the PGA Championship in August. As a PGA Tour member, he will have to play 15 times next year, although that includes the majors and World Golf Championships.

Are Bigger Drivers Better?
Are the New, Bigger Drivers Better?
If you want to take advantage of technology advances in golf equipment, you should consider updating your “old” driver. The new, larger headed drivers will provide the following benefits over those designed twenty five to thirty years ago:
- The first thing that helps all golfers, is that the heads have increased in size from about 300 cc (the volume measured in cubic centimeters) to as much as 500 cc. There seems to have been a race to see who could make the biggest head.
- Unfortunately bigger is not always better. There are diminishing returns with head size and about 400cc seems to be close to the optimum.
- The reason the bigger hollow heads (300cc or 400cc) are better than the 200 cc model is that more weight can be distributed farther away from the center of gravity, in the shell itself. This increases the MOI (Moment of Inertia), which means that the club head is inclined to twist less if you miss the sweet spot. The loss in ball speed is about six mph if you miss the sweet spot by ½ an inch or more. This is considerably better than with heads 200 cc in size.
- Another advantage one gains from the bigger heads is that most of them are made of titanium and have bigger faces. This allows for a spring like effect. The face actually deforms and recovers during impact. The energy losses in the face are less than the energy losses in the ball and as a result the overall efficiency of the energy transfer to the ball from the club is better. The COR (Coefficient of Restitution) is higher. This means that the ball will leave the face of the club faster and more distance will be the end result.
That’s the good news. You need to know, however, that the actual gains you get on average, will be less than the technology can provide. Impacts that you and I make are generally less than perfect hits on the sweet spot. Therefore, I’m afraid it is back to the range and the old faithful BOB system (Buckets Of Balls)!

Whiskey Creek Golf Course
Course
At the end of a mile-long drive through forest and field, Whiskey Creek Golf Club has a feeling of privacy and seclusion. Bordered by a high ridge of hardwoods and a winding, free-flowing creek, the property contains many different environments and natural features including springs, streams, stone walls, wetlands, rock outcroppings, broad meadows, pine forests and dramatic views of the Catoctin Mountains. Architect J. Michael Poellot and design consultant Ernie Els, a 2-time United States Open Champion, have designed Whiskey Creek to take full advantage of its spectacular setting.
Poellot and Els wanted their golf course to be as big and bold as the land itself, and they approached the design of Whiskey Creek as an opportunity to create a world-class golf course. Els has won tournaments all over the globe, and Poellot’s firm, JMP Golf Design Group, has a resume peppered with some of the most highly ranked courses on the Pacific Rim. Whiskey Creek was their first collaboration, and Els said, “We wanted to make it a winner.”
For sheer excitement, Whiskey is hard to match. The course has several elevated tees, including the dramatic fifth tee, where the tee box is framed by huge boulders and the fairway tumbles down to a green 100 feet below. The view seems to stretch across all of Maryland. The 14th tee isn’t quite as high, but the drive is even more challenging, as the tee is perched above a long, narrow lake. Even the par 3’s are formidable, protected by wetlands, water, bunkers, or rock walls – and in the case of the 200-yard 11th hole, by all of the above.
“Whiskey Creek offers a wonderful opportunity for a highly memorable round of golf due to the great diversity of the natural setting of the site’s surroundings,” said Poellot. “The golf course is a very true test of golf that Ernie and I know golfers of all abilities will enjoy playing time and time again.”
