2010 Ryder Cup Team Finalized

USA Captain Corey Pavin flanked by his assistants Tom Lehman, Davis Love III and Paul Goydos (Jeff Sluman is playing in Europe and couldn’t attend) made his final 4 selection to round out the US team.

Zach Johnson, 1 Major

Stewart Cink, 1 Major, 3 Ryder Cups, all three as a Captain’s pick

Tiger Woods, 14 Majors

Rickie Fowler, PGA Tour Rookie …wonder if he can play without wearing bright Orange, Yellow or Green =)

Team Members Qualified on Points

Phil Mickelson
Hunter Mahan
Bubba Watson

Jim Furyk

Steve Stricker

Dustin Johnson
Jeff Overton
Matt Kuchar

I love the picks and when you look at the overall team these picks line up nicely for some great pairings with the rest of the team.

Rickie Fowler and Bubba Watson: these guys are great friends, just follow them on Twitter and you will get plenty of inside peeks as to what’s going on!

Tiger & Stricker or Furyk: Tiger is finally found a running mate in Steve Striker during Presidents Cup play and he also likes teaming up with Furyk.

Cink & Zach Johnson: two good buddies with lots of experience that would pair up well but I think we will see them paired with a younger gun.

Cink & Matt Kuchar: two Georgia Tech boys with great attitudes might be a pairing we see in alternate shot.

Dustin Johnson & Mickelson: they both go to Butch Harmon and play tons of practice rounds to together!

Stay tuned for more info as we get closer to the matches!!!!

Dustin Johnson and the invisible Bunker? Brutal!!!

WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT??????

I am all for the rules of golf and some of the obscure rulings we see but this one takes the cake. Dustin Johnson being penalized for grounding his club in a “bunker” is a crazy.

Yeah, the players were warned just as they were in 2004 when Staurt Appleby got bit by the same type of infraction. Sure, it was on the local rule sheet handed to every player in the field. Sure, it was posted on the mirrors in the locker room, but it would ONLY come to a players mind if he thought he was in a bunker.

This thing called a bunker was a dead patch of dirt that has a sandy, dirt like appearance that was so far off the planet and so small that if Refrigerator Perry was sitting there his ass would cover it! Dustin Johnson, even if he recalled the rule, still wouldn’t have thought it was a bunker because it had zero identifiable characteristics of any bunker on earth.

The true problem is that the rules official pointed it out to him on the green 15 minutes later. How the heck did the official know if was a bunker???? And since he did why wouldn’t he have pointed it out??? This was the 72nd hole of a major championship and he knew there was an infraction and if he knew there was a hint of this possibility then why did he step in sooner??

I commend Dustin Johnson on the classy way he took the bullet in the head. It’s like Lincoln saying “Hey nice shot John Wilkes Booth, you nailed it!”. I get the part that it is a rule and we take our medicine in the great game of ours but Jeez Oh Man that was horrible.

I could go on but if I do it won’t be beneficial because the damage is done. I just hope that the rules committee takes a hard look at this to prevent others from this.

Course

Stretching across gently rolling terrain on the edge of Virginia’s Piedmont region, the Club’s 18-Hole Championship Course meanders through woodlands and along quiet, reflecting waters. Tom Fazio, whose course designs have populated Golf Digest’s Top 100 for years on end, has created in Independence a varied and inventive course appealing to golfers of many skill levels. With multiple tee placements, strategic bunkering throughout, and numerous holes that might be described as character building, it is a course that promises to excite and challenge both champions and amateurs, alike.

9 Hole Short Course

For junior golfers, families, and accomplished golfers who want to work on their short game, the 9-Hole Short Course, also designed by Tom Fazio, is the course of choice. Recognizing the truth of “practice makes perfect” the Short Course is adjacent to the Independence practice facility, which includes a double-ended practice tee complete with sand bunkers, pitching holes, and expansive putting greens.

Tom Fazio

Independence Golf Club is Fazio’s first contribution to daily-fee golf in Virginia. The layout reflects the philosophy of Fazio, who sought to create a harmonious transition form existing topographical conditions. “Not a lot of earth movement was necessary, because of the natural terrain of the environment.”

Like all Fazio courses, Independence Golf Club requires a number of shots and offers a variety of options. The course is extremely well bunkered, which Fazio says he uses to ‘frame’ his golf hole images.

“As an artist, you must decide what frames your picture. It may be metal, gold, silver or ornate – it accentuates what’s inside. Bunkers are the same way on a golf course. There are different styles and different looks that you invent, and we felt at Independence Golf Club, in order to create the set up for the golf holes — for their ‘frame’ – the bunkering we used presents a very artistic and dramatic look.”

Tom has also designed four exclusive private facilities in Virginia with fabulous amenities to complement their outstanding golf courses and practice facilities. They are: The Virginian [Bristol], Lowes Island [Sterling], Bayville [Virginia Beach], and Two Rivers [Williamsburg].

The US Open more than golf, a treasure for son’s and daughter’s

US Open week brings back so many memories of gritty performances by the great players and quality memories of fathers and their kids on the golf course. So often we hear all about latest on the state of the top players in the world and their chances to win this coveted major and on Sunday NBC golf coverage will spatter in a few flash of a player talking about his Dad.

For most of the golfing world we don’t strut down 30 yard wide fairways with rough like a cabbage field but we too take the opportunity to go out and tee it up as our Fathers Day tradition. For many years Dad, my brother and I  would tee it up this weekend and always had a great time regardless of score, we just loved being together. It was our Dad who got us into this life long love affiar with this great game. Hitting the range on Rt. 22 in Bound Brook, NJ became common place.

It’s a wonder we stuck with it when we played with his old Northwestern irons and persimmon woods that look like they were dragged behind his car after their wedding in 1964. The irons were as forgiving as the guards at the gates of Augusta National and the balls at the range were as smooth as Kojak’s head. But it wasn’t about great shots it was about spending time with him hitting balls at the cart boy collecting the nuggets off the hard pan dirt patches scatter amongst a few patches of grass.

I will never forget the one Fathers Day weekend my Dad and I spent together. We won a trip to Hilton Head in a tournament and I got their a few days early to sample a few courses, a few beers and lots of cigars. When Dad came in it was a great time he and I on a short weekend golf getaway one of the only one’s we ever did. We played some great golf courses and I really don’t remember which one’s but I do remember our time together. My dad wasn’t a drinker then but it was great to finish up the round to have a beer and diet coke and just shoot the breeze.

I lost my dad to melanoma in 2004 and only fitting that he had just returned from a 3 day trip to Myrtyle Beach 2 days prior. You see he did what he loved, spent time on the golf course during the day and by night sharing stories with Mom and the other couples on the trip. Knowing that his final week was filled with what he loved is comforting and I too would love a story book ending from cancer and not having to suffer with a long drawn out finale.

One of the other great US Open and Fathers Day stories that was more about fatherhood than golf was Payne Stewart’s second US Open victory over Phil Mickelson at Pinehurst in 1999. Payne Stewarts resolve as a father to hold Phil by the cheeks after sinking his putt for victory wasn’t about his joy of winning the US Open just moments ago but his reaching out to Phil and saying go home and enjoy becoming a father.

Payne Stewart’s life was filled with humor, fire on the golf course and built around the love of his wife and kids. He also was taken from us way to early but his impact was that of a man that lived 100 years. His legacy is that of a champion golfer but also a Dad and it is only fitting the lasting image we have of him is his graciousness to another soon to be Dad.

Both of these men had an impact on me. Both were strong christian men that set an example to me as to the love of Christ and steadfast faith despite tough circumstances. For these reasons and more my son, Payne Robert Pritts, bears their names. There is a time coming when Payne, now 6 years old, will sit with me and watch the US Open. When the time is right we will watch the final putt drop then spend another few minutes watching two great stories: My dad’s video from his funeral with everyone sharing about the man he was and Payne Stewart’s documentary on his life.

The US Open more than golf, a treasure for son’s and daughter’s.

Reviews & Testimonials

Diamond in the rough! My family went down here last summer and it couldn’t have been nicer. It is not located that close to beach, but they do have shuttle drivers that take you there within 10 minutes. Rooms were very nice (modernized) and the people were great. Golf courses at Barefoot were amazing, take your pick! I personally loved the waterway outside my balcony as well as the huge pool! Located right by a ton of shopping and prime location. Great place to stay guys, were going back here in 2 months once again. No complaints from us, awesome.

Tillinghast, and Donald Ross.  Bedford Springs Old Course has undergone a total renovation overseen by noted classic golf course restoration architect Ron Forse, restoring it to its original course layout.  A round of golf on these historically significant tees is a must-play for golf enthusiasts of all levels.

Reviews & Testimonials

Quietly elegant, graciously inviting…From the classic colors to the lack of superfluous ornamentation to the beautiful setting, this is the meaning of a “resort.” The food was good, the spa luxurious and the service unparalleled. We weren’t five-dollared to death and consider good value for the money. Example: the stone “fire pit” roaring away on a cool Spring evening was populated by folks with “S’mores” kits, featuring all the ingredients and a long-handled cooker. Just lovely.

Reviews & Testimonials

Seaview is located on over 670 wooded acres of pinelands on the New Jersey Shore’s pristine Reed’s Bay – only eight miles from Atlantic City and just 45 minutes from Philadelphia. Offering 297 impeccably redesigned guestrooms and suites, championship golf on two world-renowned courses, fine accommodations, and 27,000 square feet of premier meeting and special event space and much more.

My fiancee & I stayed here for a 2nd time recently & we absolutely love this hotel! It’s located in a very nice area, just far enough from Atlantic City, but also a close enough drive if A.C. is your type of place to be. The grounds are lovely, friendly staff & we enjoyed a restful night’s sleep. We loved the room’s decor, the comfy bed & extra roomy closet. The only complaint we had was the creaky floors as you walk to your room (we were on the 3rd floor both times, a little distance from the elevators), but other than that, we had a fantastic visit! I must admit that after reading that this hotel is pet-friendly which we weren’t aware of, we will probably not stay here again. We’re not pet people & the idea that a pet(s) may have been lying/sleeping/playing on the bed at any time, would be a reason for us not to stay here again.

Stayed there under the former ownership. Still a high level of service under Dolce. Rooms are comfortable, albeit a bit dated. Meals provided for my conference were good. The property is convenient to Atlantic City if you want to stay away from the crowds and are willing to drive. The golf courses are classic old style courses, and the staff is gracious and helpful.
